Decks are one of the most rewarding home improvement projects you can have installed at your home. Aside from adding value, there is nothing more satisfying than sitting on your new deck in the morning with a hot cup of coffee.
Cedar is an excellent choice for a deck construction. It is dimensionally stable: it lays flat and stays straight and is easy to work with. It has even grain and consistent density make it less likely to warp, cup, or twist. Treatment or stain is recommended; especially end cuts. When exposed to sunlight, it will “patina” or change in color to silvery gray. Cedar has good thermal properties allowing it to stay cool to the touch in summer heat. Most importantly, the surface stays smooth and splinter free over time. Most cedar decks last 20-30 years with treatment.
